Dogs will always be part of the life in the country, and here are some simple rules being around animals or near them.
- Never show fear, as all animals detect fear and it gives them the strength to be more daring.
- Always look at head and tail. A barking dog with a waging tail is no problem.
- Always make sure they have heard your voice, ' hello doggy', or if barking behind a fence, 'be quiet'. Dogs are use to commands.
- Loose dogs in farmyards, like sheep dogs, can and will snap the back of your legs if you show fear and are walking away from them, just like they do with the sheep to get them together.
- Cows in fields with young. If the path goes between them, don't disturb but go round them. If they start coming towards you, use your voice - never be a threat.
- Dogs on leads/cows. Always let the dog off the lead if cattle starts coming towards you. If no dog and the cattle starts coming towards you at speed, use your voice and make yourself very big, they will soon stop.
- Geese---Show them who is the boss one way or the other.
- Horses have a tendency to stand by the style. Put your hand up facing the horse, and in a firm voice say walk back--back. They are use to commands.
